Completely stuck in NE corner. Not sure if I have the correct solution to 7d, but here goes,
6a Man whose welfare I don't care about, one up the pole? --C-
9a Romantic involvement not excellent, always fighting A---A-
6d Bird circling very loudly about ----R-Y

Any help much appreciated

9 take 2 letter indication of excellence out of the romantic involvement, then add an archaic word for "always" to give a general fight

6a - a bloke referred to in a well-used phrase expressing selfishness (title of a film)
That will give you the first letter to the bird in 6d - around alternatives to very loud and about - this is a theme clue.
9 - alternative to excellent removed from romantic engagement with alternative to ever added to make a fight.

Finished. Many thanks chrise and rossim. Should have spotted 6d but had 22d as a double definition for one of the 8.

Thanks again, prospero, for the correction re 22d. Had the answer as a very recent PM as well as a surname of a themed person who was not a carnivore. Needless to say I couldn't work out the clue. Still struggling to parse it.
