Agree ChrisE, that "of caterpillar" fits "larval" better but i is the second letter of vial, so what indication is in the clue to remove it? Lair and vase seems to work in a way that lair and vial doesn't.

I tried checking if caterpillar could be used as a plural but I only found caterpillars .. Larval is good, except that i is not the third letter, so I opted for larvae, although that is plural. Could be a printing error as RT is known for them, or setter error

so sorry! (blush of shame)
I made a typo it is caterpillars not caterpillar.

Therefore I am going with LARVAE
