Thanks for Nick Hornby clue. Didn't help that I had spelled 10a incorrectly. Still not happy with parsing of 15a and 23a. but all done.

No, I've just guessed a famous Russian (ice-pick?) - other wise finished.

I don't see where the X goes in 11a.

Also, is the "carrying" the wrong way round in 16a?

(I'll give the clues if anyone requests them)

I think i've finally got 7a a manservant who acts as a personal attendant to his employer; "Jeeves was Bertie Wooster's man" I was looking for a town not a servant. Thanks Chrise for your patience and help.
