I did the Times 6468 earlier this morning and discovered 'urtext ' from Chambers Word Wizard - and then was able to look it up in my NEW Chambers ! ( I don't know how I ever managed without it!)

Well done, Elle!
A NEW Chambers, no less!
Mine is circa 2003 and a faithful friend.
Showing it's age, and usage over the years, now, though!

Yes, Rusty, I gave up the idea of waiting for Christmas! Every time I failed to find an answer, someone always came up with a reply from Chambers , so I decided that was definitely the way to go! My OED (1972 edition)wasn't up to the job any more.

My first introduction to Chambers was from my lovely crossword-mad grandmother. She bought the 1912 edition which I was always asking to borrow. She kept it in her roll-top bureau where it had to placed after use. it is now re-covered (with wallpaper) for the umpteenth time and i treasure it.

One of my favourite words in Chambers is "taghairm".
Look it up?
I am determined to try it, one day!
I think we all should!

New word for me, rusty.

I love the "esp." - surely you wouldn't be dong it properly without that equipment or location?
