Okay Guys even with the hints I am still not seeing 5 ac :(

Perhaps your mind isn't as twisted as peterm's, emrach. Do you have the answer? If you do, you separate it into ? as ????. The four-letter group appears in Patrice, and you replace it with the first letter to get a word that means bleep.

Thank you and I always thought I was twisted! Will go and work on it. Hints for 39 ac would also help but I get the feeling I am missing the obvious:)

Rosalind, the clue you mention is in a style that peterm has used in the past, for a hint, look at the clue from ginge at 43a where the same clue construction style design has been used. In peterm's clue, it's sorta the opposite way round, where the answer is the equivalent of ginge's 'afore' but you have to get it from working backwards. Hope that's not too confusing, I even confused myself then but I'm sure the guys will put me straight if I've explained it wrong.

I thought 43 across was quite straightforward! Am awaiting parsing of 5 ac (when ab posts) , even though it's been explained several times on here!! So far this JE has been quite instructive, what with sour cream and film stars

I've finished the main grid (I think), but my brain is hurting trying to solve the 9 letter ones. I'v only got 6 (including mine), but I've 3 more 3-letter words in that don't correspond to any of these.
I think I am looking forward to the answers, now!
