I haven't got 2D and 10A either, and I'm pretty certain I know what the answer to the latter clue is, but not with what it pairs.

Have now got those two. 2d had been confused by the fact that I had not put a pair for 12a, just the original word! 10a took a while as was using a slightly wrong word for limit. Now need 18d and 23a. Any clues?

pendragon - for 10a you need a synonym for limit , then lose "train" from it. The grid entry is usually the first one of this pairing

For 18d w(wife) rig = the "gear" , synonym for can , put them together
for 23a french "i" + anagram of randy + c - literary dickens pair

Any hints for 24,25,27 please?

Thanks, xwordfan, but, although 10A was the second clue I solved, I got a four-word musical term (amongst other meanings) for which I still can't find a pair.

2dn - you need to extract from middle of all 3 words of 17 Pendragon. I'm left with 23, 25 and 27. A hint in return would be great.

10ac is not musical. Got 23 at last. 24 - synonym for barely, lose the L for liberal and find the mate.
