all done but iffy on 5d , I have "__O__O /__E__K" !
May I 21d a hint- I will not be an 18d :-)

5D Top (definition, think clothing)
mark (4-letter word, as in facial)
only (4-letter word) must get entered

I think I have 4d but is it the name that goes in the grid? And if so is the name altered before entering? Also would be grateful for help with any of across clues. Finding this even more challenging than usual!

The name (first name, surname) goes downwards and symmetrically, as the preamble says. It appears top to bottom in two lines of non-crossing lights - it's not the answer to any of the clues.

Here's a hint for 8A:

Lad + to please, around abbrev. for date = clingy garment

Then you have to subject the answer to 4D before entering it in the grid.
