And if they're right, then across answers aren't reversed.

I can't think what else can be done with them...
1. reverse
2. anagramatise - but then you won't know where the non-crossing letters should go unless it's not just jumbling them up but it makes a new word
3. swop whole words around in grid

Hmm. My 11a could anagramatise and fit in with 7d but that appears to be a name. Dancer, actress, engineer...

I have the same 2 livs and agree with you! More thinking!
23d is an anagram too

Ooooooooh! I think I have it! 4D I mean, and now I know what the across clues should be doing.

And those 3 fit together if I do what 4d tells me to do.

Hint: (lots of space in case you don't want it)

you don't end up with real words going across.

And with the aid of 23d I've now got 28a in the grid.

I'm going to have to stop & do something else but I'm happy to have got 4d. (I bet you've finished, sudokulover - ?)

Bizarrely I got 4d quite quickly and also, with a bit of lateral thinking and a couple of acrosses, I've got the themed character too. Had a break to do some work but hope to finish it off ok.

I have all the down clues now except 5d. and most of the acrosses, but I'm a bit stumped by the four ambiguities. I know where they are (I think, anyway) but has anyone a hint as to how to resolve them as per the rubric?

Hints only, please.

Famous name in 4D, symmetrically as per preamble.

5D defn is (a) top

Thanks Ixion - though this could be where I come a cropper, knowing, I think, only one famous exponent of 4d.

Got 5 down just after my earlier posting, but thank you anyway.

I have an answer for 17ac but am unable to parse what I have. Am I right in thinking it contains bitters?
