Glad you got there in the end, dizoz. That abbreviation in 4D was unfamiliar to me, and it put me off the scent for a while, as I was trying to use the more familiar one and getting nowhere.

I've finished now, though I just nicked a couple of hints from here to do the lefthand side!

Thanks livs. Having finally got 4 down, he was the first person I thought of (although I had heard of the other one referred to by dizoz for all the wrong reasons and could probably name 3 more (max)). I did know that he was born in Belgium, the only reason being those interminable, anti-British bores who try to find fault in every British sporting success. I still only have 5 clues completed in total so much still to do... Hope you are feeling better.

28a flogging doesn't refer to the "whipping/beating" definition.
synonym that you need for pupils is in "Bradfords" crossword solvers dictionary if you have one
18d You need a synonym for usual prices (5,4) than "lose" the "go"

Thanks for the good wishes, dizoz and angst: so nice of you!
It's only a cold/virus but I've had it for over a week and am heartily sick of it now, esp. the coughing and the sore throat.
How are you getting on?
