Very sad. Only recently I used his favourite, the general election one to explain the perfect clue to a crossword sceptic.

I remember vaguely of a clue in the very 1st puzzle I ever finished. It went something like this:"Insect island, right? The butt of all jokes" (6, 2, 3)
It was such a long time ago I can't be sure, but I found it so funny.

Two other puzzles I also fondly remember: Guardian's cryptic n° 20,000 and the ANC tribute. So clever, so inventive and so fair to the solvers. Even when you look up the solution on the next day because you aren't finished, you can see the logic (and wit!) in every clue.

Hi teenieleek....what was the clue for general election?

I was always a bit intimidated by his reputation....thought it would be too hard for me....but occasionally checked in on the puzzle and then answers later....great sense of humour...
