hi old gal, will try to help, but not v good at alternative clues lark....
20a - think of a chess piece
22a - another word for rely on - ***** me, I'm a doctor???
13d an old fashioned case [I think of it that way anyway!] outside another word for also - sum total to trash
15d boys' name surrounding another word for defeat....
Don't know whether I've muddied the waters, or what...
Nightowl, I think the 'new' Wallender is the original Wallender, who appeared in the first series, which I didn't see, but they did show a couple of his episodes not so long ago - deffo not the English version - altho' don't hold me to that.....

Doh! Thanks Chrisg. It seems obvious now you've pointed that out! New Swedish thriller on saturday. The star actually played Wallender in an earlier Swedish version. I'm missing The Bridge already. What a great character Saga was. Not the usual "renegade" cop - she was certainly different, but not by choice. Sofia Helin should get an award.

Welcome Night Owl, but looking at the times you post you seem more like an early morning person. Which is it?

I am stuck on 13 down and even with Chris4food`s help I still cannot get it.

Caravaggio. Are you doing the garden these days with no time for crosswords?

hi Mondrian
I've just come in from the garden. Had enough hedge-trimming for today.
13d. is a verb meaning "to trash"
The first 2 letters and the last 4 letters together are French for suitcase with "and" (meaning also) in the centre.

Do hope this helps.

Jazzgirl. Thanks yet again. I`ll go and consult my French dictionary. I am very impressed that you are cutting a hedge. I hope it is not too high.

I`ll have to be a dissenting voice re The Bridge. I watched the first episode and that was enough for me! Apologies to all the enthusiasts. But glad you liked it.

PS Mondrian
the French word is now in common usage here for a small suitcase.
The hedge is only just over 5ft. high.!
