Just got in.

You beat me to it, Aristo.

I'll post the solution in a new thread so it's more obvious.

It's pretty bad when an American thinks of Australia before the Oz we all grew up with here. It just finally struck me in a "duh" moment. I've been doing too many Brit puzzles.

Not at all.

I've always thought Aussies were wannabe Americans.

Was surprised about the comments re 31A, ASEA.

Didn't strike me as unusual. I'm sure it's been in many a NA crossword, but you're right. No mention in Chambers, or the Canadian & NA Oxfords. The only refs I found were at Princeton, Miriam-Webster, & this:

It's an old one.
Yes, we should petition Chamber's to include it.

Love their dictionary. Got it a year ago. Don't know how I managed the Speccy before. So many obscure words we don't find over here.

Ditto re ASEA; it didn't at all strike me as odd. Just checked and it's in my OED, but hyphenated- with no Rare or Obs.! I finally got a Chambers (for Christmas) and it's one of my favo(u)rite kitchen appliances.

Afternoon Gents,

Emerald city - OZ, Bloody hell! I like it but it's a mind stretcher.
I was just getting used to my Green belt explanation

Interesting explanations but you're over-thinking it. I only go into high gear for the British ones.
Harper's is usually low-key, but I have a few dillies in the files. Really regret not saving them from yeas ago. There were some beautiful unnumbered ones, or was that The Atlantic?

Aristo, nice one re favo(u)rite. Somewhere here I wrote "color" your way.

I spared you from the Celine Dion version. 0-8
