Strictly speaking, you're right. But this was the clue that most struck a chord with me. I can't explain it any better than that.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a prat of myself before sounding off. It's only my opinion, and you are the judge, but I consider aristopanes's entry as a very good pun but not acceptable as a cryptic clue. I hope we are still friends?

I can see rambler's point. Over the weeks of Clueless many entries would have failed a crossword editor's scrutiny for one reason or another, usually the lack of an anagram indicator or the presence of superfluous words and even, occasionally, the absence of a definition. I would have to say, with all due respect to Aristophanes, that this is the first winning entry that in my opinion would not have satisfied a crossword editor. Fortunately, it didn't have to, as this is a friendly competition for happy amateurs!

rambler et al: I used Brit because shambolic is seldom used outside the UK. I have NEVER heard it in the US or Canada or South Africa, for example. My dictionaries say either Brit. or chiefly Brit. And I couldn't resist.

I,too, can see rambler's point and I agree with everything that Bullfrog has said.
