You may well be right with / as the preamble says symbols of 1 or 2 str lines and all my others have 2.
I'm now looking down the diagonal - "T" is a roman numeral for 160, "A" can be 50 or 500. (perhaps 50 - this could refer to the bit in the preamble "in one case the first to be used" Worth a try?

Got it! Yes , go down the diagonal , do the maths ... result 1800 , no look at the bottom left corner - H is the Roman numeral for 200! Voila!
Back to Grid B now!

grid B, both 13a and 23d are racecourses. if correct that leaves 9a, 13a to be linked.

And, I still think the main preamble implies the setter's name needs to appear in Grid D somewhere!

Hi S-lover - well spotted - is the "H" the one below 19D?, and if so is the setter above?

kilgore - in Grid A ,B ,C, E the setters name appears in the grid in the same position (In B it's the theme word). In this position in D we almost have protege?? I'm probably on the wrong track?
Any ideas on what is to be highlighted in B. Does it mean a pair of letters or a pair of clues?

In Grid B the occasion is presumably MM so the pair beginning with M to be shaded?

Ixion - yes the H below 19d. Whoops I do not have MM anywhere in B - where have I gone wrong?
Kilgore - Lavatch is there - go down the diagonal to see the L V T A A C then get the H from under 19d.

n1 - your MM is 9 and 16A
