I presumed it was a surname because when I try and use the 'quick solve' option on this site, it doesn't return any words. Having said that, I don't really understand my answer for 17d which provides me with an 'a' for 24a's 2nd letter.

not being a name should alert you to the fact that the answer is probably defined at the other end of the clue,ie a prison.
i would have thought that to be quite helpful to most people.sorry i didn't chat.
