I wasn't sure about the reference to cabbage because I couldn't see under the cabbage entry any other reference but for the word to thieve which obviously has an a in it. Was there another variant spelling the same as the colour?

I think we're getting confused over the spelling of the colout. It is exactly as required in the verb meaning "to thieve". The same spelling as the duck from which it comes.

Elizabeth - just double checked - it has a Chambers entry which directs to the usual spelling
