I'm still on proofreading duties so late again.

Thanks to Picaroon for a first-rate puzzle - some of the 16's made me LOL and what a broad spectrum they covered.

Lots of potential COD's but I'm going to pick 23d.

Yes, I burst out laughing at 23d, and so did my wife and daughter when I showed them the clue - my daughter got it instantly!

I thought this was great fun. I was held up by having put the wrong answer in at 28 (same first two letters but an ending I was struggling to parse) and was annoyed with myself when the penny dropped as I’d been thinking about that meaning of 16 when initially looking at 13 (which it obvs wasn’t). It’s clearly an extremely versatile word!

Reviewing the puzzle after a night's sleep, my solution of 14 was off by one letter because I misunderstood the wordplay. I now think it's a funny clue which should have contended for COD. Thanks for those who posted.

Hi Geeker,

14a - Is tricky because the first letter is usually clued by "soft" rather than 'gentle' but I'm sure it's correct so no complaints.

Hi Birder,

3d - 4 letter "vehicle" is reversed/'upturned' and goes around an anagram/'running' of "a trial" - definition is "method for scrapping" (scrapping as in fighting)

Don’t think the vehicle needs to ‘go around’ the anagram, Brendan, as it’s at the top as well, I thought the same at first :-)
