I am stuck looking for the theme, although I have several of the clues that people have named. Is it literary?

Ah I've finally found it, thanks all (though I can't see what S.Africans have to do with it but one step at a time!) I suppose they came up in Grade 5 Music theory but that was over 60 years ago.
