I am learning about cryptics (the hard way by tackling the genius one but I sometimes find it helps thta there is a theme or twist to them which gives me something work on as well) and sometimes kick myself when I see the answers so I find threads like this helpful when I am stuck. Was I right for 23d?

sorry i must have something wrong as i had 18a as DACE which i then encrypted to FCEG so then I can't hadd 18d as LAURUS.

I must admit it was a bit of a guess that seemed to make sense as ace being part of a deck of cards and the only fish I could think of then was a DACE.

Your 3rd letter 'C' is correct; if you 'work back' from 'L' for the first letter I reckon you'll get it.
