14 ac is a group that he was connected with in his early days.

53d = etc is one of his works - think of someone like Diana Dors, say.

I found both of those by googling - try Wikipaedia.

36d. Less confusing if we alter it around a bit. - Most of the lights (another word for lights) and most of the trick - relating to music or dance.

Good old Ara - just what was needed on a wet and windy bank holiday - you could never take him to the beach! I spent yesterday trawling the web for all the AP references but am stuck on 29a - Y---s diary? or perhaps 19 d isn't otley. Enlightenment anyone?

It's not Otley. It's the name given to some PoW camps, Oflag, 0 + flag. I'm stuck on 28d, dammit.

28 Dn synonym for film ad. and something towed.

Oh, OK - it helps if you have the right name in 41. I had Scalegri, but I see a poster has drawn our attention to Sr Scaliger. So 28d can be what it was wanting to be after all.
