Thanks David W #24 & alsoclaire #25!

I agree somewhat with jouef #21 - lots of 'Googling' needed to get some of the answers but I really enjoyed doing it. Certainly some obscure stuff in here but also many great clues.
To create a crossword with a theme such as this and include so many references to the subject is an amazing feat; not just play titles and characters but answers such as Ronnie Scott and Dog-end shows how brilliant Araucaria is.
I think overall my favourite clue was 33d - superb!

I am finding this a considerable challenge - even with the help of Mycroft Google.
I have fared a little better thanks to some postings here but would be grateful for answers or help towards: 14 across,53(with its bits) and 36 down.

14 ac is a group that he was connected with in his early days.

53d = etc is one of his works - think of someone like Diana Dors, say.

I found both of those by googling - try Wikipaedia.

36d. Less confusing if we alter it around a bit. - Most of the lights (another word for lights) and most of the trick - relating to music or dance.

Good old Ara - just what was needed on a wet and windy bank holiday - you could never take him to the beach! I spent yesterday trawling the web for all the AP references but am stuck on 29a - Y---s diary? or perhaps 19 d isn't otley. Enlightenment anyone?

It's not Otley. It's the name given to some PoW camps, Oflag, 0 + flag. I'm stuck on 28d, dammit.
