54a: Yes, it's an 'i'. Answer is an AP work but the second '10' does not refer to the same thing as the first '10'.

Thanks everyone - once I got 51d with the help, I understood the rest. Great crossword - good tribute to a wonderful playwright.

At risk of introducing a sour note, does anyone share my dislike of 42a?

A clue on the lines of "Bikini attacks, say" would be nicely ambiguous, but to my mind "bikini" with a lower case "b" is giving the false information that the reference is to the garment and not to the place.

When hw was a student he wrote a sketch or play called "Forty-four Flying Fletchers" - then three actors came on stage, and said the rest couldn't appear. They were supposed to be acrobats, but the three that appeared didn't do any acrobatics. I didn't know this - I found it on google.
