Yes, I did SL! On the third attempt. Finally discovered I'd only made a tiny error, but of course you are not sure where it happened, so started all over again.
I don't like the way the number boxes are delineated in the Observer (online edition). I prefer the Saturday one.
Still, I can finish them now - it took me a few weeks to get the hang of them.

Clevertask - I like these 2 sites for my "daily" killers: www.sudokuwiki.org and www.sudoku.org.uk - have you tried them?

Clarification would be appreciated for the following......

17A Cornish mining area regulated tin, in being cleared (4)

I've got ?ETT - assuming it's probably nett - can anyone explain why or put me right.

25D Borders, merely edged by gravel ridge? (5)

??UTS - thinking abuts which requires as to mean gravel ridge - is this a variant of os?

27A Scotch drinker, i.e. S cot? (7, 2 words)

SAN??E? looks like "sand bed" but cannot fathom it.

Thanks in advance

Good morning Ixion. Your other two queries:- as is indeed a gravel ridge - Chanbers gives it as a variant of came or eskar.

Dear Chambers again gives sand bed as a Scottish term for a toper.

Last one : 9d Fen's a small part of this end of plateau - no mounts around (4) Y?AN
Can't make sense of "yuan" but nothing else will fit my letters?

It is yuan. The wordplay - maybe you've got it - is:- end of plateau = u; no -nay - mounts around, so y-u-an.

A yuan is a chinese coin, and a fen is one hundredth part of it.
