The HU_ bit does mean skirt as in the verb to skirt.

Thanks AJT: somehow I missed your suggestion for 28d. Still puzzled by 2d - just been through my electronic version of Chambers, can't find anything...I'll have to get the hard copy..

Ah stevem, very good. I had never equated skirt with HU-. And the final word is obscure to me in that context. Well, off to chu- my tea now!
Look forward to next week's challenge.

Clevertask - I don't know if the Chambers Words Wizards site equates to their electronic version, but I have often found that words in the hard copy are not to be found on their site. Buy the Book!

Oh I do have the book, two in fact, but I tend to use the electronic (& I don't mean the web site) one as it has an anagram sorter, etc. I did in fact find both of the query words there - I missed the definition of bolt when I was reading through.
The only downside of Chambers is the lack of proper names - I used to like the old Collins which did have a plethora of them. Did you know that if you have a library card and your library participates, you can get access to the full OED?

Np, Clevertask. I didn't. I do have a plethora of dictionaries. I, too, keep a Collins for the proper nouns. Apparently in the newest edition they are not given - so hang on to the old one.
