I know it's early but it's done, although I have struggled with 21a - the answer, to my mind, means 'red' or 'flushed' not 'fancy' - and 2d, 19d and 20d because the construct of the three clues is clumsy.

I agree with you about 2d, 19d and 20d, clumsy!
I think 21a is OK, one of the definitions is excessively ornate. The state's name is a Spanish word meaning flowery of full of flowers.
I find that the compiler is quite clever at disguising anagrams, I often miss them at first.

I thought 19D was actually quite a clever clue. I didn't like 17D as the wordplay still evades me and I don't see the "Nuisance" part of 20D, although I'm sure I have the right answer.

John, I see the wordplay in 17d as the first four letters sound like (noisy) a card game, and the last three letters sound like packed. The whole word meaning yearning.
The nuisance part of 20 down is a four letter word begining with b, which loses the fist letter(front).

Hi,
I'm a bit stuck on the bottom right corner especially 20d and 22a. I think i've got 19d but it looks like a straight clue with no cryptic part. I can't think of a nuisance that is B???. Any help much appreciated

Right - Now i've got 22a but i've lost 19d. (Well i've got a unit of length for 19d but i don't really see what its got to do with string - maybe that's what you're all complaining about. It is a little weak). Still stuck on 20d

Got 20d! (And no i don't like it either). Only got 19d left and i've got a weak candidate for it. i'll come back to it later and it will probably be obvious.

The answer is the length of a cricket pitch and, yes, it's a poor answer!

Hi torvic,

Thanks, now I see the first part of 20D. I had the right answer but couldn't see why. As for 17D it looks as though my thinking is totally wrong. I have a seven letter word meaning "noisy" as in a party would be, but couldn't rationalise the rest of the clue. Need to go back and rethink that one.

I have returned to the RT after a few weeks and still find some of the clues impossible.

Any help with a couple might just get me started
