Your post no16. I have both 11a & 12a and you say they are both synonyms of 'last word'. I'm probably being very dense so could you please explain?

for 11a look up synonyms of screen and ghost - you will find a word common to both.
for 12a look up synonyms for vespers(there aren't many)
"bradford" refers to Bradford's Crossword Solver's Dictionary (full of synonyms)

I already had solved 11a & 12a but was a bit confused over the hint Leslie gave.

At one point I looked at the 'last word' (41a) which, incidentally, has an error in the clue.

Yes Tony - I agree 1000 mph is not a ton. Also I first thought 40a was an anagram but on close inspection it's not!?
