Sorry, I meant that you will have two of the letters, the second two. I thought the name was Scottish, rather than Irish, by the way.

Thank you all, stumbled my way to 27a, never heard that name before
had the umpire for 18d but the last bit is puzzling me which also upsets 29a. Am working on 8d but have no idea as to 20a, afraid I don't even understand the hints.......... back to the drawing board!
Have a further query about 6d which is a 'job' answer, however I have a very peculiar selection of letters thanks to 9,11,13 & 15a all of which seem right

18 D. Resists = stands up against = ….
20 Non-meat eaters
6 D is a very ordinary, normal word. 9 isn't involved in it, did you mean 6?

I think you've been given most of the letters in 8D.

For 18d, the first letter of your umpire is the additional letter

For interest: Ruairi is Irish, Ruairidh is Scottish and after much consideration my grandson’s name was spellled Rory because he lives in England and the Scottish version would have caused him big headaches later. Plus, none of us speaks Gaelic anyway!

I thought this was fun and different but 8, 18 and 24 were also my last in.

Thanks, malone.
I thought that was quite fun. Took me ages to get started though.

Thanks for the name info, teenieleek. Although I can see the attraction of the Rory version, I much prefer the sound/pronunciation of the other two, Roo-ry. (Rory/roary is how I'd describe a bright Hawaiian shirt!).

Cloverjo, glad my tiny bit helped.

Major groan and holding of head in hands.... 8d & 6d, how silly can one be. Will now try and be a bit more sensible with the other clues. Thanks everyone.
