Chambers word wizard also gives the relevant person by entering an 11 letter possibility with the "known" letters.

Thanks - I now have the fellow by googling LEE + the obvious 2 letters + pioneer. There follows a long (very long) wiki article which I suppose I could read to find the thing wot 'e invented and the thing he didn't like. Is it worth the effort? (It's been a pleasurable solve until this point.)

Perhaps my post @ 7 will help. Once identified and read in conjunction with the preamble it's fairly straightforward.
