That must be my quickest finish ever, I'm sure the really clever folk must have done it in about ten seconds flat! I don't quite understand the second instruction but otherwise all done.

Re the second instruction Pat wasn't that where he chucked them? So I'd guess green or blue.

Ah yes, many thanks. I was interpreting the instruction too literally I think, now I get it.

With respect to the second instruction surely green is the most appropriate?

Good point Gitto - get your drift - though I'd hope they'd accept either as valid!

Help please! Almost finished the grid. Stuck on 37d and 40a. Only found 3 of the 1acrosses. Completely stumped by 6d. Thanks for any hints.

Both 37 and 40 are acrosses. 37d is a name found in literature rather than the name of a species I think.

As for 6d, one look at Google should do it.

The excellent start to the year had to come to an end but this still decent puzzle may well attract some newcomers. Chalicea is the most prolific of setters with hundreds of puzzles to her name and a huge resource of thematic ideas but probably because of her high productivity, the quality of her clues sometimes suffers. 27 is delightful and there are quite a few more good clues but 18,24,31,5 and 7 seem rather clunky with poor surface reading.
