Thanks.

That's what I thought, though I also thought the message was ambiguous.

But Laphria says he found another word and shaded it in a different colour.

'On August 16, 1858 the first message sent via the cable, other than technical messages sent by the electricians setting up the system, was, "Europe and America are united by telegraphy. Glory to God in the highest; on earth, peace and good will toward men," sent from England.'
I wasted much time trying to find 'telegraphy'.

I'm giving up and sending it off like that. A very easy puzzle compared to last week's became much trickier due to the ambiguity of the instructions.

I am not sure why I deserve congratulations, Jazzlover, but thanks anyway.

To your questions, yes, no, no and no.

However, we are not told to leave anything 'light'. Refer to all the Chambers' definitions of 'light' and read the hidden message again.

Christ on a bike this one was awful. How did the editor let this one through?

Mike Laws must be turning in his grave right now, surely.

The weird thing is that the theme only made the puzzle harder for the setter to compile. Solvers did not need to understand the theme - or even know that there was one - in order to fill in the grid. The only difficulty for solvers was in finding the (unsignalled) acrostic, and in guessing the right interpretation of the instructions.
