I think I did overlook some possibilities. It'd be nice not to have to go all the way back...Can anyone please confirm the following :
Is the letter sequence IAPCREMS...(5-41) ?
Do the letters VarY also appear in sequence (52-65) ?

Yes x2, but of course you need two more letters to complete the sequence of ten :-)

Nice to have an empty afternoon. I found my error, in the value of L.
And because I could see a couple of differences from what has been entered so far on the forum, I went through and reconciled every expression.

The string of letters I gave before is wrong. It should read ILAPCREMS, with the last letter being T.

Which clashes with the comment that S=7. Surely S=8.

Meursault I can confirm S = 8 and M = 7. Your list is correct.

I think this was really tough but was enjoyable all the way through with a superb ending!

Really struggling with this. Not helped by unclued giving M=7. I can,t for the life of me see how 7 is the sum of two squares! Perhaps I am being obtuse and should throw in the towel.Can someone confirm that 10 across is 56169. Thanks.

Uncle - you are right with 56169. M= 7 is in the last stage of the puzzle. In the main part M = 40. Hope that clears things up for you.

Uncle_W, I can assure you that Unclued is consistently helpful and friendly. But the comment M=7, and my comment S=8, were not referring to the values for those 2 letters, but their sequence in the ten letters which must replace the digits 0 to 9. I'm probably responsible for this ambiguous state of affairs, so please excuse me.
