I'm afraid the penny still hasn't dropped with me. I have the completed grid, can see the 5,9;5;4 and have tried to follow posts suggesting what to do with the circled letters, but how does BBC relate to 6 letters? Also I have Dee for 38ac but cannot see how 'backer' is changed to arrive at this. Just about to rip the paper up!

Backer becomes banker- Dee as in River Dee. Banker or flower are often used as synonyms for river!

THE BBC are the 6 letters. So you need to change the relevant circled letters- most of them only have one option. You can then get an anagram of THE BBC.

Thank you djawhufc, I think banker for river is a bit weak. I now have the completed puzzle, but why don't I feel satisfied?

Flip-flops is an anagram indicator.

Rinsed becomes diners

Cobblers is changed to gobblers and is the definition.
