Thank you bunty.
I was looking for adda or addas and could not find them.
Did not know two letters for esker.
Must file it away for future reference.

20 was the last to fall for me as well, also never heard of 'as' used In that context before.

Agree with everyone else - bit too simple but brought well into the acceptable / enjoyable range by a nice idea, well executed.

And welcome relief for me after a few struggles in recent weeks.

Must have been easy as even I have finished it before the end of the weekend and without any help here. That does not happen often!

Was somewhat intrigued by the structure, so I unravelled it and wrote it out in conventional form to see what was going on. It really is a very clever piece of construction.

Average word length is close to 8, as opposed to the usual 5.5 to 6, and the number of unchecked letters in each entry is well below the norm - average of less that one unchecked letter per clockwise entry I think. A very well constructed grid.

Pretty to look at, that is for sure. Any irregularities are well hidden in the naturalistic form. However, I'm troubled by the last cell of 11/19 at 06.15 (in clock terms).

11clockwise needs it to be an S, but the clueing of 19anti invokes a plural, which seems, imo, to require an R.

Think it has to be the S but I can't justify how. (or where I have gone wrong).

"failing to hold" = loses with phi at the front and anagram of hope inside

n00b -- the plural at 19 anti is French and it is spelt with one letter less than you might expect.

It is made up of phi + loss ( rather than loses ) around the anagram of hope.

ah, gotcha thanks. i'd been assuming a 12 letter word including the cell at 05.45 too. even though the clue clearly says (11) so that is my bad, mum's the word eh?

Struggling to parse 19 clockwise. Got the answer but can't see why.
