As you seem to be nearby, K - can you tell me two things.Hopefully I'vr finished it, BUT the only words that seem to fit for 17 and 44ac are sharon and snakeweed, and I can't see any sense in them

Hi AJT

44a is Shoreweed..(corregiDOR WE SEE H)

17a I feel the definition as shown may be incorrect and have emailed the Editor to query it.

Hi Sudokulover - as you have probably noticed - I'm just the same. The only connection I can make is that sharon fruit is a persimmon, and in Italy the name is Khaki - or thereabouts. But there's nothing else that fits.

AJT

17a is 5 letters. Possibly your bar is very faint but if you check symmetrically to 39a you'll see it is 5.

I think the answer is clearly SHAKO but I am querying the definition as given.

Thank you K, obviously the same with Sudokulover. I'd been thinking "shakos" but couldn't see how 14 d could have been any different... Why muted, I wonder.

Thanks K - the dark bars there on the pdf version don't show up properly either.

This has set me thinking of 1 ac - I'd put Abdul as the only name that fits, without wondering why, but no I can see there's no u to make an anagram. The letters to play with are i and e.
