I did a fair bit of guessing too.
My breakthrough was 19d (the longer word is 9 letters) and its pair underneath in that column. (the longer word is 8 letters. anag of 'say e aged')

must be anagram of eg(say) wed + aged then...

Nelson, 19d. I had the first word as hallstand but can't do the anagram you suggest. Am I dense?

stand is correct ..for the 2nd part of 19d we have edgeways ...cant get the anagram ... enter ways (tracks) in the grid ... put stand + edge and we have ....google it ....

24a extras are se (from spar se ) and vern (from vernally...from v et ernally) severn ...google it with the one above and you should be on the right track
