Hello Sudokulover -- That was bright of you - I hadn't realised they were all in one row - thanks for that. Yes, I assume that is what is meant.

The significance of 39ac and 40ac is that they are part of a quotation from the theme - I didn't know it, I found it by googling.
Rather an awkward xword, I thought. I've just been sitting in the garden with a whodunit.

Hello. I'm glad Im not the only person baffled. I seem to be getting on with the 'jumble' clues, but the 10 omitting a reference have me puzzled. I can't seem to pick up the theme. Any help to make the penny drop would cheer me up. It's my first ever spectator!
Many thanks.x

Not a very nice one for your first one, Laura. As K said in an earlier post on this thread, if you can get the 2 extra letters in the 1st 2 across clues is should reveal itself to you. Read the earlier hints carefully.

Thanks, I've just caught on to the theme. Way before my time! It's still the ten with the highlights that are bemusing me. I'm sure the ev is easier, but I shall soldier on.
Thanks again.x

With the exception of 16a, all the across clues till 35a spell the title. Does Olduvai Gorge or
Australopithecus Afarensis help? ;-)

Hi AJT. Not quite. "K" mentioned 2 unclued, but I count 7. 39a & 40a seem to repeat from the quote, but the others have me baffled. Tried names of famous jewels, but no luck.
