Hi ginge, didn't have much time on my hands to make a decent entry so gave it a miss, however, I do look in at the results so congratulations to Marty.
Pigale's entry. I'm not sure myself but after writing it down, staring at it and spending some time thinking about it, my outcome turns to - could it be an &lit with a reference to Ruth Lawrence who's father home-schooled her to a very high level of education (genius) in mathematics and was actually referred to as Harry -Svengali - Lawrence (her father) in some text.
And maybe this gave her an eventual position of being 'less servile' in her new life in Jerusalem without her father's dominant influence.

I know, a bit deep but is that not how we weirdo crossworders think... ha ha !
Hope you're cool up there pal.

Hi Les, cheers for that. I came up with that reference myself (after much thought and googling) hence my supposition it was a cryptic definition/&lit but we'll have to wait on pigale for confirmation. They don't come weirder than me, mate.

Well done BBM, and thanks Ginge for hosting;

Hi Ginge,

Sorry but I was out all day yesterday and did
not check on my return.

Out of interest, I meant

Manipulator = definition

Servile = slavering Minus R (Ruth-less) - anag of def
(which anagram is not indicated! but it was not a very
good clue as I forgot anagram indicator!

PS- Thank Les for crediting me with more cleverness than I
deserve! Unfortunately, I did not think on that line at all.
