I didn't get to tackle this until yesterday and I'm left with one clue...

I have a word that could fit, but can't reconcile it with the clue. I know there's an 'i' to be removed, but feel I must have gone astray!

Fie is slightly mad, st (quiet) a (American)
working is surplus hence the i

and the down clue ...tanka are the boat people ... enter in gris as NKTA

tank = to defeat
