Xij - this is one of the clues where a messenger must be removed. US flight is lam going west (reversed). The other part is a rich man from the bible (it's in Websters) giving an island nation. Hope this helps!

Thanks smartie. I knew the answer and the letters to remove, but I would never have got the wordplay. You're obviously a lot smart(i)er than me.

Thanks Xij - I'm obviously not so smart - I meant Chambers, not Websters!

Completed what I found to be an extremely enjoyable puzzle - with one slight annoyance remaining. I can't find the extra word which defines 22a. I have a suspicion it must come from 19d, which I can't quite parse.

19d is a 4 letter exclamation meaning well, above (superior) NO and L for licentiate. I think the extra work you seek is the penultimate in 15a

Frustratingly, all done and understood apart from 30a. Can't parse the clue for the 9 letter answer and the entry's first letter is unchecked. No help from searching for related retrieval objects. A hint would be appreciated.

Smartie, it's a word for passes through, with an anagram of HOT inside. The whole thing describes why someone can't hear. The first 4 letters, including all of the anagram of HOT, are dropped.

You don't need to drop the H. Just the O and T.

Just finished last week's in time to start this week's. My final answer is 1d, for which I have an answer meaning upright, which I think is redundant from 3D, but can't figure out the parsing so am annoyingly missing the final messenger.

Any hints appreciated, thanks.
