I'm feeling like one of the 29s today. Can't see a way towards 1, 10 & 42. Is 10 the meaningless one? If so, how does one approach it?

10 is definitely the meaningless one.

Your faith in me is most encouraging. I will persevere. It is often the denouement that bugs me most. But today, please help with 8d. I have EDEMAS but suspect I am wrong because I don't understand 11a (scald in seconds from spilling hot tea, stupidly) and is 15a MIDI. If so, please explain.

As someone said earlier, parsing is hard for some of these!
11 A is just alternate letters.
I can't remember how I got Midi- and you haven't given the clue to remind me.

EDEMAS is right (anagram of MADE in ES, alternate letters in BETS). I think MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, which allows mutiple instruments to be played/recorded on PCs....or so I understand.

Tomsdad, the top row is an anagram of the first letter of entered and then bold text read.

The bottom row is given cryptically by 'notice', anagram of 'set', then 'before'.

Still cannot make sense of 10d although three letters just before the end seem to suggest a word connected with the top and bottom rows.
