I'm a bit behind with this one. I have FAYCEQ as the first six letters given by the extra words in the across clues and messages 2 and 3 here suggest that if I google that I should get the beginning of an old proverb but I get nothing of the sort!
After a quick start I have been limping towards the finishig line. I am stuck on the abbreviation. Can anyone provide some hint for what I am looking for? I assume it is thematic but have not found abbreviations in my searches on the theme. Also my last unanswered clue is 10d. And since I seem to have most of the letters (E?ESES) with a clash in the fourth cell, this is particularly frustrating.
Catkin - the abbreviation is not thematic. It is the first 3 letters of 9d after insertiing new bars. In 10d your missing letter is m. Parsing the clue gives all letters of manuscripts (mss) introduced by base (e). Answer is a plural word for vomiting. Hope this helps!
Catkin - 10D - The 3 letter abbrev, for manuscripts - each letter proceeded by the logarithmic base (E) - meaning vomitings (would find in Chambers under emet,,,). The abbrev. 9D (3 letters) is not thematic but just as appears in grid.
