Isn't 'across the water' simply referring to 'in France'?

Yes, but it's also the only other suggestion that I can see of which way round the solution should be.

Yes: the 'across' in Q was my first find: the C was less obvious but more satisfying and satisfactory.

The online version has now disappeared which means that my partially completed (saved) solution has also vanished into thin air :(

Thanks zozozo, but I don't have access to a printer this weekend (not at home) so will just have to remember where I placed the answers. It was going nicely online, as I could just "clear" and "replace" answers elsewhere. I could write out a grid, but honestly, I cannot be bothered now :(

Yes, what's the story with that? Sorry, but these gimmicky crosswords are too much for my patience, especially when this happens in the middle.

The indicators are C and L surely? 'Up' and 'Reverse'.
But unless you want to send it in, it's irrelevant.
