When I went to Chambers word wizard and put in the letters it indicated no words found.
I should have looked up the word in the dictionary.

All done.

I came to the forum late - wow what a lot of help! Thanks to everyone for their constructive help. I've now finished (after a long struggle) but couldn't parse a few:

13a - brass=pro??

19a - there's no mention of ruby=curry in Chambers (thanks xwordfan for the rhyming slang)

38a - ara=a group of stars??

40a, 1d, 29d - got the answers but can't parse them.

Any help with these gratefully received and if I can help with anything I'd be glad to do so...

brass = synonym for pro(stitute)
ara - the altar is a southern constellation

40a possibly gre(y) for bleak reversed to give erg - sandy area
1d possibly a word for fine with its 1st and last letters taken off ...going??
29d slot = deers footprints or bars opening time ??
