I do have a Chambers, malone, but I thought ought was non-mainstream enough to be right.

Aristo, I thought the same (about Ought) too, but it simply didn't work for the clue - so I had a little browse in Chambers... and Oucht appeared and made perfect sense. I think your instincts told you there was something not quite right about Ought!

I have finished this except for 34 across (unclued) It has 5 letters, and I am missing the middle one, which could be 'i', 'o' or 'a'. I am unable to parse 19 down, and 40 across. I am not giving my answers so as not to be a spoiler.

34 A is clued - have you given the wrong number?

In 19 D the second letter can mean See - it's from Latin and is in Chambers. The rest of it has standard crossword stuff, including a three-letter word for 'valley'.

Thanks Malone. I printed it out from the Spectator site and it was 'widowed' or 'orphaned' in the printout. The middle letter is obviously 'i'. My answer for 19 down would be a description of Didier Drogba, for instance. I have seen the Latin for 'see'. Cannot see the 'valley', and 40 across is still a mystery, and is keeping me from my rest.
