Ans is a type of stitch and made up from an anagram of sporting +O (oxygen)

Thanks Chrisg. I hadn't spotted the anagram, doh! It must be "Gros Point" then - not something I'd heard of before, but it is in the OED. Another new use for me this week is "ton" to mean fashion(able), style, etc. in 3d. Otherwise it was fairly straightforward.
