Well, I could have been here until next Tuesday and not seen Vita. Though I was happy with that as my entry (what else could it have been !)

Cockie, I had similar thoughts re xxxx by xxxx. I have YL->B?, which I think can work with LBY in the square.

Am completely lost with the first playfair. I seem to have a row or column SUFHA and can't figure out how this can possibly be right. Help with single clues 4d and 33a would be very useful - this is tough!

MandyRob, SUFHA isn't the only possible representation. Eg HASUF also suits HA->AS and FU->HF

I think 4D is just ACID

Unclued, I never got back to you yesterday re 9,20 : I don't have the second half yet, the first half is a 2-word ruminant, OKS reversed inside a strange looking American word for mess.

Can anyone explain the wordplay for the first half of 8,28 ?

Meursault, the first half of 8,28 is a double definition. Check Chambers or look up 'goose' in Bradford's.

A belated thanks to buzzb for the explanation of Tory. I would never have thought to check the names index.
