Still pondering on the last letter for the unclued 1d STAR? ????

Had a look on answerbank at the thread there and "spoffy" reckons it's not a "T" ..... ??

The fourth (IV) plum stone (St) sailor (TAR) is where you would expect it, aboard SS = STARS

There are equally good arguments for either stars or start, depending on how you read the end of the preamble. The tar is in the ss or the start is at the start of the grid. The fact that there is no definitive clue as to which is correct is a disappointing end to the puzzle.
