I am wondering whether the new setter's nom de plume is suggesting that his effort is mediocre entertainment or that crosswords in general are?

Possibly - I thought 16a was a bit mean (?ABO?) as a NABOB is also a sort of (big) cheese

All finished, although I'm still puzzling about 26d "Skipping about, TV butler gives offence". I have ?RSO? but I cannot make sense of any answer. Can any kind soul please enlighten me? Thanks.

Carson was the butler (in Downton Abbey)
C = about, so remove that (skipping about') to get Arson, offence.

Thanks, Malone. Living in Berlin has many up-sides but obviously one of the down-sides is not having access to BBC TV. Hence my ignorance of Downton Abbey and the butler's name. Great. And still time to meet the post deadline;-)
