Wonder if this is of any help - I have just browsed the Net and discovered that there is a variety of pear called Red Anjou, and there is also an Anjou wine which actually is called Red Anjou, (as opposed to its cousin White Anjou)

Do you think the setter could have thought of all this for his clue? and in this case, should he not have added something to explain?

The clue could have been (in a different grid) eg
What's given rats extraordinarily?
