To me an &lit clue is where the definition and the wordplay are the same.
eg Cop in male form (9) = policeman

Pears don't grow on grapevines!
Or is there something I'm missing?

I cannot think of any other way to describe a clue where it appears to be a "general knowledge" question, while at the same time including a cryptic element. There is no definition as such, just a question

Well, if GRAPEVINE is the answer, doesn't that go against the "rules" of cryptic clues, in that the answer should defined in the first or last word of the clue ?

That is why I thought &lit was applicable to use in this clue.?
There is no definition at the beginning nor at the end.
Instead the clue as a whole functions as the definition which is what an &lit clue does. I would welcome ideas from some of those clever guys on here

To my mind, this is a very poor clue. The only reason GRAPEVINE appears to be correct is because nothing else fits.

And I am not sure what "&lit " means !

I agree with you Mikey on it being a poor clue.
